**AMANDA*BYNES*5150*HOLD*HOW*IT*WENT*DOWN**
There was a collective huge sigh of relief at the news Amanda Bynes was placed on a 5150 hold Monday night after many months of ever increasingly bizarre and worrying behavior.
As OKMagazine.com previously reported, the 27-year-old was placed in the care of a Los Angeles area hospital psychiatric ward for mental health evaluation after she was seen allegedly starting a fire in an elderly stranger’s driveway.
Under the terms of a 5150 a person can be held at an approved facility—against their will—to undergo evaluation by professionals for a period of up to 72 hours.

So how did it all go down? What is happening to Amanda while she’s under the 5150? And what does the future hold for her after the 72 hours are up?
OKMagazine.com spoke to Dr. Adi Jaffe—who is not involved in this particular case and does not treat Amanda—but is a leading specialist in the field of addiction, biological psychology and behavioral neuroscience, and he weighed in on the procedure, its logistics, what will happen while Amanda is in hospital and what is likely to happen next.

“A person is sectioned under a 5150 when it is deemed they are a danger either to themselves or to another person,” Dr. Jaffe explains. “Police officers are given training in this field and they are authorized to make that judgement.
“It usually requires some pretty extreme and worrying behavior to be exhibited for the decision to be made and authorities are trained to recognize the difference between someone acting bizarrely because of say alcohol or drug use and those that appear to be displaying symptoms of mental ill health.

“After the decision is made the person will be taken immediately to a facility and they will be evaluated by a mental health specialist before they are admitted.
“Given the nature of the situation people can often be very agitated or aggressive—especially if they are being admitted against their will—and sometimes they will be sedated in order to calm them down.

“When a person is sectioned they are not arrested at that time for any alleged criminal acts they may have been involved in, they are not read their Miranda rights or treated as a criminal person. If the person is of adult age their parents or next of kin will not be informed of the situation, unless the sectioned person requests that happen, then facilities may do so.
“As to what Amanda’s day to day life will be like while under the 5150, that varies from facility to facility—each one is different.

“However, she will undergo rigorous evaluation by staff and will likely attend one-on-one therapy sessions in addition to group.
“Even though it is only a 72 hour hold, people can often undergo a great deal of change—if there is a mental condition and it is easily diagnosable, and if they are medicated correctly, people can often make startling progress even in that short period of time.

“It can actually be a great relief, as in many cases people have been living under a great deal of stress prior to the 5150—this can often be the case with celebrities, as their lives can prove to be very stressful—especially those that have been in the spotlight since a young age.
“During the 72 hour hold, the patient will be closely monitored and evaluated, if they do make progress and it is deemed they are no longer a danger to themselves or others they may be released at any time.

“If an underlying mental health issue is detected or suspected staff will usually encourage the patient to stay in treatment of their own choice—if they refuse to do so they will refer them to an outside specialist for treatment and if they believe the patient will benefit from medication, they will give them a prescription to be filled.
“When the patient is released police will then decide whether to press charges for any criminal activity they may have been engaged in at the time they were sectioned—though it seems unlikely that would be the case in this situation according to the reports of what happened.”

So, will Amanda—who has been estranged from her parents for some time now, tweeting in April, “I don’t speak to my parents anymore, they don’t talk to reporters on my behalf. Don’t believe anything you read about me unless I tweet it”— be back out in the world on her own once again when her hold is over?
“I don’t know what Amanda’s true situation is with regards to her family,” Dr. Jaffe says. “So, I can’t speak with any authority on that subject. But, I do know from past cases, that often families can reunite after situations like this.
“Many times the initial estrangement has been caused by the patient’s behavior or delusions and when stabilized they often reunite with their family or loved ones once again.”
However, the likelihood of a happy family reunion happening for Amanda isn’t looking good right now.
TMZ, who were first to report that Amanda had been sectioned, spoke to Bynes’ father—after the neighbor whose driveway the actress allegedly started a fire in said she thinks Amanda’s parents should pay for the damage caused by their daughter—and he said he has no intention of doing so.
“Amanda needs to pay for it,” Rick Bynes told TMZ.

Life and career
Early life
Bynes was born and raised in Thousand Oaks, California (part of the Greater Los Angeles Area), the youngest of three children of Lynn (née Organ), a dental assistant and office manager, and Rick Bynes, a dentist who also practiced stand-up comedy.[2] Bynes has two older siblings, Tommy (born 1973), a chiropractor, and Jillian (born 1983), who has a B.A. in History from UCLA and has also acted.[3] Bynes’ ancestors immigrated from Ireland, Poland, Russia, and Romania,[4][5] and her maternal grandparents are from Toronto, Ontario.[6] Her father is Catholic and her mother is Jewish. Bynes has described herself as Jewish;[7][8][9] in 2007, regarding her religious beliefs, Bynes stated: “As far as religion, I was raised both. I learned about both Judaism and Catholicism. My parents said it was up to me to decide [which faith to adhere to] when I grew up. I’m sort of a spiritual person anyway. I haven’t decided yet on a religion. I don’t know yet exactly what I believe.”[10]
Bynes is interested in illustration and fashion design.[11] Bynes moved from Los Angeles to New York in order to facilitate her fashion career.[12] On April 4, 2013, Bynes announced via Twitter that she has an eating disorder.[13]
1993–2011: Television and film
In 1993, Bynes attended a comedy camp, and began professionally acting at the age of seven, appearing in a television advertisement for Buncha Crunch candies.[14] During her childhood, she also appeared on stage in versions of Annie, The Secret Garden, The Music Man, and The Sound of Music.[15] Bynes became a regular cast member of Nickelodeon‘s Figure It Out and All That. She was a regular cast member on All That for seasons three through six. She also starred in her own sketch comedy show, The Amanda Show (1999–2002).
Bynes made her film debut in 2002’s modest box office success, Big Fat Liar. Her first leading role was in 2003’s What a Girl Wants, co-starring with Colin Firth, Oliver James, and Kelly Preston. From 2002 to 2006, Bynes starred alongside Jennie Garth in The WB Television Network‘s sitcom What I Like About You. Bynes had voice parts in 2003’s Charlotte’s Web 2: Wilbur’s Great Adventure and 2005’s CGI animated comedy, Robots. She appeared in Arliss as Crystal Dupree. Bynes appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair‘s July 2003 edition with nine of Hollywood‘s other young female stars.[16][11]
Bynes was named one of Teen People‘s “25 Hottest Stars Under 25” in 2006.[17] Later that year, she starred in She’s the Man, a comedy based on William Shakespeare‘s Twelfth Night.[18] Bynes appeared in another romantic comedy, Love Wrecked, which was shot before She’s the Man but released after it, showing in cinemas outside of the United States in 2005 and 2006 and debuting in the U.S. on the ABC Family network on January 21, 2007. She also portrayed Penny Pingleton in Hairspray. Bynes next starred in another comedy, Sydney White, released on September 21, 2007.[19][20] Later that year, Bynes signed a five-year deal with Steve & Barry’s to create her own fashion line, Dear, consisting of apparel and accessories. The clothing line launched in stores August 16, 2007. The line was cut short when Steve & Barry’s filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2008 and went out of business completely in January 2009.[21]
In 2008, Bynes appeared in the Lifetime Television movie Living Proof as the student assistant of Harry Connick, Jr.‘s character.[22] Bynes was also originally set to star as Ryden Malby in the 2009 comedy Post Grad, but was replaced by Alexis Bledel.[23]
In June 2009, Bynes inked a two picture deal with Screen Gems. The first of the two movies was the 2010 teen comedy Easy A, starring Emma Stone and Lisa Kudrow, and the second was to have been a starring role.[24] Bynes also planned to reprise her role as Penny Pingleton in the sequel to Hairspray.[25] However, Hairspray 2 was canceled. Bynes was also originally set to star in the comedy Hall Pass but dropped out and was replaced by Alexandra Daddario.[26]
Bynes appeared in lingerie on the cover of the February 2010 issue of Maxim magazine, highlighting her photo spread inside. She stated, “I think every shot … was sexy” and that the new look is “who I am.”[27] That June, Bynes stated that she planned to retire from acting, announcing on her Twitter page, “I don’t love acting anymore, so I’ve stopped doing it.”[28] A month later, Bynes had an apparent change of heart and “unretired”.[29] At the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, Bynes told People Magazine that she’s merely taking “time off.”[30] In September 2012, Bynes said that she has once again retired from acting and would instead focus on launching her career as a fashion designer and rapper.[31][32]
2012–present: Legal problems
On March 7, 2012, Bynes was stopped by Los Angeles police for talking on her cell phone while driving.[33] On April 6, Bynes was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after side-swiping a police car in West Hollywood. Her bail was set at $5,000, but she was released without being required to post bail.[34] On June 5, Bynes was officially charged with driving under the influence.[35] On September 4, Bynes was charged with hit-and-run related to leaving the scene of two separate accidents, one on April 10 and another on August 4, without providing proper information.[36]
On September 6, 2012, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) suspended Bynes’ driver’s license.[37] On September 16, Bynes was caught driving with a suspended license, and had her vehicle impounded[38] and on September 21, she was charged with the same.[39] On September 27, she pleaded not guilty to two charges of hit-and-run with her court date set for December 17,[40] but before she had to appear in court, she reached a settlement with the other parties in the alleged hit-and-run incidents from April and August and the charges were dismissed.[41] On May 9, 2013, Bynes pled no contest to the charge of driving with a suspended license. She was sentenced to three years’ probation.[42]
On May 23, 2013, police went to Bynes’ apartment on West 47th Street in Manhattan after they got a call from the doorman about someone smoking marijuana in the lobby. After a short investigation, she was arrested for reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, and criminal possession of marijuana. She allegedly threw a bong out of her 36th floor window. Bynes was taken to Roosevelt Hospital for mental evaluation.[43][44][45] Bynes denied throwing a bong out a window, and accused a policeman of sexual harassment,[46] stating “He slapped my vagina. Sexual harassment. Big deal”[47] which the NYPD denied.[48] In July 2013, Bynes has been placed under 5150 mental evaluation hold after setting a fire in a woman’s driveway.[49][50]
