‘Ole Miss Party Girl’ Shelby Herring Gets Candid On Camera, Goes Viral (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post | By Ron Dicker Posted: 10/18/2013 10:21 am EDT | Updated: 10/21/2013 3:45 am EDT
Meet the newly appointed spokeswoman for the University of Mississippi. Well, appointed by the Internet anyway.
Ole Miss student Shelby Herring is fielding congratulations on Twitter for a scene-stealing interview that has gone viral.
Herring, dubbed by some outlets as the “Ole Miss party girl,” talked candidly about campus life before a home football game Oct. 12 against Texas A&M.
While some respondents gave manicured answers to an A&M film crew covering Ole Miss’ Grove tailgating scene, Herring offers hilarious, no-holds-barred commentary on the school.
We’ll give you just a few tidbits to whet your appetite for the video above. (You might also want to wet your whistle afterward.)
Shelby on the rah-rah-ness of it all: “I love school spirit, but let’s not get me wrong, I wouldn’t have school spirit without a couple vodka waters.”
Shelby on academic standards: “Ole Miss, we may all have lower IQs … I have a higher IQ than most people but … well no, that’s a lie.”
“We never lose a party,” Shelby declares.
AdWeek sees gainful employment in her future. “She’s almost certainly being flooded with job offers as we speak.”
The Big Lead sees … a future Kardashian? “This Ole Miss coed needs her own reality show now.”
We might actually watch that.
Ohio State Marching Band Does Michael Jackson Moonwalk Like You’ve Never Seen Before (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post | By Sarah Barness Posted: 10/21/2013 1:22 pm EDT | Updated: 10/23/2013 8:51 am EDT
The Ohio State University marching band celebrated the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s album, “Bad,” during halftime of the game against the University of Iowa Saturday.
Their flawless synchronicity is pretty mesmerizing, but it’s game over once they start doing the moonwalk at 4:40.
Seriously guys, stop reading and start watching because The Buckeyes are so bad, they’re good.
Demonstrators Across U.S. Protest ‘Epidemic Of Police Brutality’
Posted: 10/23/2013 4:36 pm EDT | Updated: 10/23/2013 5:54 pm EDT
Organizers say protests took place in dozens of cities, including Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Cleveland, Seattle and Fresno.
People across the U.S. have mobilized on Oct. 22 since 1996 for a National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation. The protests were organized by the Stop Mass Incarceration Network, which also works with the Stolen Lives Project — a project to document killings by law enforcement nationwide.
“Police view all blacks and Latinos as criminals that are allowed to be either stopped and frisked here in New York,” a protester in New York City said to Press TV. “In LA, … three or more black or brown youth standing together are considered a gang with no rights and are allowed to be rounded up.”
Police departments have said that they do not institutionally target people of color and that they carefully investigate claims of police brutality. In a phone call with HuffPost, an LAPD spokeswoman said that the department denounces racial profiling and that all claims of wrongful police behavior are investigated and, when appropriate, result in discipline.
In Seattle, protesters burned flags, and police had to disperse fights between protesters and anarchists who seemed to have taken advantage of the situation, according to RT. A total of about 70 demonstrators participated in the protest, the Seattle Times reports.
About 70 protesters in Los Angeles stopped traffic and attracted dozens of police officers, as seen in the CBS video above. Members of the Youth Justice Coalition also gathered at a Compton City Council meeting to demand that city officials take action to reduce violence in the community.
“When [police brutality] happens to one person in the community, it affects the entire community,” Michael Richardson, a leader of the LA protest, said to Annenberg TV News. Los Angeles leads the nation in rates of police brutality, according to Annenberg.
“We don’t want to be here 18 years from now, having more and more annual days of protest,” the protester in New York City said to Press TV. “The point is to get to an Oct. 22 where we celebrate and look back to the days when this used to happen.”

Caught on tape: CA mayor’s racist remarks paint Iraqi immigrants as drug dealers and moochers
While a California mayor and his city defend themselves against accusations of racism after his remarks criticizing Chaldean Catholic immigrants from Iraq were published in a national magazine, audio obtained exclusively by The Raw Story reveals him also disparaging his town’s Mexican-American community and “Black Africans” in an interview replete with stereotype-driven opinions.
During an interview with Arun Gupta for The Progressive magazine published in May 2013, El Cajon Mayor Mark Lewis can be heard saying the city has had “a terrible time” dealing with some Chaldean business owners because they will allegedly not serve women.
“You don’t know how many times I’ve told them, if you’re open for business, you have to serve female customers as well,” Lewis told the Progressive, after explaining that, “In our society the female is the same as the male. They haven’t got that through their heads yet.”
Mayor Pro Tem Bill Wells criticized Wells’ remarks in a phone interview with KPBS-TV aired Tuesday, saying that the city does not support institutionalized racism, citing the presence of two Chaldeans, including one woman, on the city’s planning committee, while also criticizing Lewis.
“It’s an insensitive remark,” Wells told KPBS. “If he said something like that, he should apologize.”
But Gupta told Raw Story via email that he felt Wells and city officials were playing damage control in the wake of Lewis’ remarks.
“The city wants to sweep the plight of Iraqi refugees under the rug,” Gupta said in his email. “How can you have thousands of people from the same community living in squalor, with few job prospects, with high rates of depression and trauma being unaddressed, and say race is not a factor? If race was not a factor then we should expect to hear as much concern in El Cajon about the situation of Iraqi refugees who have fled a war that destroyed their country, as we do about the U.S. soldiers who took part in that war.”
Lewis also alleged in the interview, which was recorded in March 2013, that schools in the area had problems disciplining Chaldean students because of their culture’s alleged misogyny.
“The mother can talk all they want, and they’ll pay no attention to her,” he can be heard saying on tape. “[In] their culture, it’s not until the male talks to you that anything gets done. Because they don’t recognize that females are worth anything, and your mother’s just there to take care of your father.”
Attempts to reach the California chapter of the Chaldean Federation of America before publication were not successful.
Some of Lewis’ remarks, including his statement that some Chaldean students benefiting from free lunch programs at school are “being picked up by Mercedes Benzes,” were published as part of a report on the influx of Chaldean immigrants into El Cajon, which dates back to the 1950s.
According to the Progressive, nearly a third of the city’s population of around 100,000 people is of Iraqi descent. But many of the city’s new residents told the magazine they were having trouble finding a job, which corroborates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finding that 67 percent of Iraqis who came to the U.S. after 2009 are unemployed.
In one remark that was not published in the article, Lewis blames inter-faith conflicts for the mass emigration of Chaldeans to the U.S.
“Right now, the Moslems [sic] are causing hardship with the Christian community in Iraq,” Lewis says. “So they’re bailing out of there as soon as they can.”
KGTV-TV reported on Tuesday that residents from various communities publicly criticized the mayor’s remarks during a meeting of the local city council.
“The citizens of El Cajon deserve better than someone to oppress them and say, ‘Hey, you guys don’t matter,’” one Chaldean resident, Mark Arabo, was quoted as saying.
Lewis did not deny making those statements in a separate interview with KGTV after the meeting, saying, “I made those comments but not in that order,” arguing that they stemmed from complaints from other residents looking to qualify for the free lunch program.
“First time, they come over here, it doesn’t take them too long to learn where all the freebies are at,” Lewis says in the interview.
Meanwhile, Lewis can also be heard on the tape saying, “There’s lots of prostitutes in regards to the Middle Eastern community” and telling Gupta that the increasing number of Chaldeans had touched off drug-related tension among three different minority communities.
“The Mexican community feels intimidated, in regards to Chaldeans trying to get into their turf, in regards to selling drugs,” Lewis says. “Same as the Black Africans, Black Americans.”
Arun Gupta’s entire interview with Mark Lewis can be heard below.
KGTV’s story about the protest against Lewis’ remarks, aired on Tuesday, can be seen below.

US ambassador to Germany summoned in Merkel mobile row
Steve Evans in Berlin: “The response in the morning papers has been blistering”
Germany has summoned the US ambassador in Berlin over claims that the US monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone.
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will meet US envoy John Emerson later in what is seen as an unusual step between close allies.
Mrs Merkel has demanded a “complete explanation” of the claims, which are threatening to overshadow an EU summit.
She discussed the issue with US President Barack Obama on Wednesday.
President Obama told Mrs Merkel the US was not monitoring her calls and would not in future, the White House said.
However, it left open the question of whether calls had been listened to in the past.
“Start Quote
It offends because Angela Merkel governs by her mobile phone – she is often seen to be checking it or even sending texts at political rallies”
On Monday, France summoned the US ambassador over reports in Le Monde newspaper that the US National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on millions of French phone calls. A day later, Le Monde reported that the NSA had spied on French diplomats in Washington and at the UN.
French President Francois Hollande had already called for the issue to be put on the agenda of the summit, where EU leaders are due to discuss Europe’s digital economy, economic recovery and immigration.
Other leaders are also likely to want further clarification from Washington over the activities of its NSA in Europe, says BBC Europe Editor Gavin Hewitt.
‘Completely unacceptable’
The German government has not said how it received the tip about the alleged US spying. But news magazine Der Spiegel, which has published stories based on material from former CIA contractor Edward Snowden, said the information had come from its investigations.
Press review
- Germany’s Berliner Zeitung regrets that “only now does the government appear to really understand what it is happening”
- France’s Le Figaro says the German government’s reaction is “a warning shot directed at the United States”
- The New York Times fears that there is mounting damage to “core American relationships”
State-monitoring of phone calls has a particular resonance in Germany – Mrs Merkel herself grew up in East Germany, where phone-tapping was pervasive.
Her spokesman said the German leader “views such practices… as completely unacceptable” and had demanded a “complete and comprehensive explanation”.
“Among close friends and partners, as the Federal Republic of Germany and the US have been for decades, there should be no such monitoring of the communications of a head of government,” said Steffen Seibert in a statement.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said the US “is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor”.
He said the US was reviewing the way it gathered intelligence, to ensure that “we properly balance the security concerns of our citizens and allies with the privacy concerns that all people share”.
German ministers’ phones have reportedly been protected using technology from security firm Secusmart since 2009. Secusmart said in March that German government officials would be issued with new, highly-secured technology made for Blackberry mobile phones.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama had “assured” Chancellor Merkel the US was not monitoring her phone
A German IT expert told the BBC that security services for many countries could have intercepted the chancellor’s calls before she had full encryption.
A number of US allies have expressed anger over the Snowden-based spying allegations.
Veteran French European Commissioner Michel Barnier told the BBC on Thursday that “enough is enough”, and that confidence in the US had been shaken.
Mr Barnier, the commissioner for internal market and services, said Europe must not be naive but develop its own strategic digital tools, such as a “European data cloud”, independent of American oversight.
‘No business as usual’
Germany’s press echoed a sense of outrage, with a front-page commentary Sueddeutscher Zeitung – one of the country’s most respected papers – referring to the “biggest possible affront”.
German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere said it would not be possible to go back to business as usual. This is more than a tiff which will blow over easily, the BBC’s Stephen Evans reports from Berlin.
In July, German media carried comments by Mr Snowden suggesting the US NSA worked closely with Germany and other Western states on a “no questions asked” basis, monitoring German internet traffic, emails and phone calls.
“They [the NSA] are in bed with the Germans, just like with most other Western states,” Mr Snowden was quoted as saying by Der Spiegel – though Mrs Merkel denied any knowledge of the collaboration.
President Obama had assured Chancellor Merkel in June that German citizens were not being routinely spied upon. At the time, she was criticised by her political opponents for not being more sceptical.
A Der Spiegel report in September that the US NSA had cracked the security codes the protect data on iPhones, Blackberries and Android devices led to demonstrations in Berlin.

By contrast, The Hollywood Reporter rumor-mongers inaccurately about the business of Hollywood and gorges on celebrity bullshit.
