A new Tumblr post containing a letter from tax refugee Ms. Lauryn Hill was published Saturday (July 20) via an unnamed source. According to the source, “she would like to let everyone know that she is doing well.”

“I have known since very young to look for the purpose and lesson in everything, including the trials,” Hill wrote. “Although it has taken some adjustment, I cannot deny the favor I have encountered while in here, and general warm reception from a community of people who despite their circumstances, have found unique ways to make the best of them.”

Hill is currently serving time in a Danbury, Conn. federal prison for a three month sentence she was handed after pleading guilty last year for failing to pay federal taxes on more than $1.8 million in income from 2005-2007.

For the past year, the former Fugees vocalist has used her Tumblr to post lyrics and career updates, to clarify rumors and to express her views on systemic racism and injustice, including how she perceives it to relate to her tax evasion charges.

“Thank you,” she wrote in the most recent post, “for the letters of concern and well wishes that I receive in the mail every day. Although I may not be able to write everyone back, please know that they have been received, read, acknowledged, and appreciated.”

The post also offered gratitude from the widely-revered Grammy-winning singer to specific supporters from New Jersey to Victoria, Canada including hip hop artist/activist Sista Souljah.
