I began my professional career at TWC 27 years ago. I was thrilled with the opportunity to learn more about weather and to sharpen my forecasting skills from the best forecasters in the country. Little did I know that I was being given more than merely that opportunity…. I was given a “purpose in life”….

You see doing my job every day, providing life saving weather information to viewers, has given me a since of purpose. I am grateful to TWC for that.. And I am equally grateful to viewers like you who continue to rely on TWC. Now more than ever, we appreciate your trust and loyalty in choosing us as your number one source of weather information. We will continue to work hard to keep you safe from storms and please know that there will ALWAYS be room under our umbrella for you!!!!

Weather Channel DirecTV

When it rains, it pours. Hours after pulling its service from DirecTV following failed carriage talks with the satcaster, NBCUniversal-owned The Weather Channel announced a new initiative in its campaign to boost its status as a public utility. The company said it will start promoting new weather emergency Twitter hashtags #GotFuel, #NoFuel and #PowerLineDown established by the White House, FEMA, and the Department of Energy, adding to recent efforts to rebrand as a key resource for information in the event of natural disaster and weather emergencies. TWC says its promotion of said hashtags “will enable local citizens to report important emergency information” and thus aid “survivors, first responders, FEMA, DOE and utility companies” in the face of emergency. The timing isn’t coincidental.

In the recent buildup to their contract talks with DirecTV, TWC has been hastily trying to build an image as a public utility company that promotes safety. The campaign began last Friday when TWC urged subscribers to lobby DirecTV on their behalf as the contract deadline approached and DirecTV launched their own competing WeatherNation channel. DirecTV followed TWC’s removal last night with a statement, saying: “Consumers understand there are now a variety of other ways to get weather coverage, free of reality show clutter, and that The Weather Channel does not have an exclusive on weather coverage – the weather belongs to everyone.”

Interests & Hobbies

Spending time with my family, playing tennis and reading. I am a big fan of music… I enjoy almost all genres of music, everything from country to rap. I like all songs by Dolly Parton and my Mississippi home-girl Faith Hill. Beyonce’ has to be my favorite R&B singer. The lyrics of her songs are so empowering for women and being a mother of two girls, I appreciate the example she sets for young girls. I also like the song “You’re turning me on” that mentions The Weather Channel by Lil’ Wayne with Keri Hilson. It’s a cute song but I must admit, I haven’t seen the video. Also, I really like the song “Gravity” by John Mayer. It’s very soothing and the lyrics are so on point. Then there is Patti Labelle, who I have loved for such a long time… she can sing anything! And last but not least, 2 icons, Luther Vandross and Michael Jackson. Growing up as a little girl, I (as most little girls)was in love with Michael Jackson and my most favorite song of all time is “The Power of Love” by Luther Vandross.

Why did you choose Meteorology?

I’ve always been fascinated with cloud development and storms. When I was in high school, I started thinking about my career and thought Meteorology was a wide open field for women and minorities.

Q: Do you love or hate Winter?

A: What I love about winter is the longer nights… I’ve always been a night person and I love the fact that the sun sets earlier this time of year. What I hate about winter is the COLD. As soon as the thermometer gets below 70 degrees, I get worried.

Q: What are your favorite vacation spots?

A: Traveling the scenic routes through the smokey mountains during Fall Season to see the beautiful color and who doesn’t love Disney?

Oct 27, 2008

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

A: When I’m asked that question, I’m always torn, because asking a Meteorologist about his/her favorite season is like asking a parent which child is their favorite. All seasons are special and they each have their own personalities. So, I really can’t choose one over the other.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

A: I get the most satisfaction out of my job knowing that the information I share could help someone save their life, property and loved ones.

Q: Outside of The Weather Channel, what TV shows do you watch?

A: I love watching “The Big Idea” with Donny Deutsch on MSNBC, Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb on NBC in the mornings and even though Oprah is on at the same time I am at 4pm in the afternoon, I tape her show and watch it at night. My mother even teases me and says that she watches my 3pm show and then has to turn to Oprah I also enjoy the E channel and HGTV.

Q: My third grade grandson has a weather project using the Scientific Method. He has to find a weather forecast for five consecutive days. Then record the actual weather each day. Compare the weather with the forecast. How accurate was the forecast? Why isn’t a forecast always completely accurate? Are predictions always correct? Can you please help us?

A: I would advise your grandson to first pick the location that he wants to forecast (example the forecast for Atlanta) then go to weather.com and look up the five day forecast. As each day passes, record the actual high temperature and precipitation for that day. Once he has completed all five days, then he can go back and verify our forecast. He will see that our forecast is the most accurate and precise than any other. Our forecasts are that accurate because we have the most advanced technology to follow cloud development and upper air patterns than any one else along with a staff of over 100 Meteorologists to analyze the computer generated forecast models. Hope this helps!
